Tanjore Paintings is a form of art developed in the late 16th century in Thanjavur also known as Tanjore in Tamilnadu south Indian state. These paintings evoke a sense of class and timelessness with their alluring illustrations of puranic scenes. This ancient art form traces its origin to Tanjavur, capital of the erstwhile Chola Empire and is popular among contemporary Indian women for showcasing their artistic inclination and tastes.

Thanjavur paintings are mostly subjected to Hindu God, Goddesses and Saints episodes from Hindu relics or religious texts visualized and sketched in the painting. In many instances, Jain, Sikh, Muslim and secular objects are also depicted in the painting. A typical painting would consist of one main figure, usually a deity, with a well-rounded face, body and oval shaped eyes. The main figure would be enclosed using arches, curtains etc.

Modern period Paintings

Later the mercantile Chettiyar community people continued to patronise the artisans keeping this art form safe from demise. Tanjore art is famous even in these modern days. Paintings are being used for pooja and decoration purposes and also a great collection for art lovers.
